Sorry I’ve missed another day… life has a tendency to get extremely complicated without warning, and I got a big splash of it yesterday.
Today’s post comes courtesy of friends of mine on Plurk. Names have been changed to protect the innocent and guilty :-)

(EJ) says: any update on the recruiter conversation?
Yes, she wrote me today! I replied earlier on Plurk with her message, which *could* be positive or not. I’m really not sure.

(MK) says: if you had a chance to be a nude model, would you go for it? :)
That depends on the circumstances, but if someone really wanted me to model nude, and wasn’t just jerking my chain, sure. I am comfortable enough wandering around Spa World in the nude, so a non-sexual situation like that for modeling should be equally okay.

(WT) says: what is the meaning of life?
The meaning of life, as in the purpose, or something else? (Me: I was going to reply “42,” but that’s actually the *answer*, not the meaning…)

(WT) says: or Why weren’t you here to go on a bike ride with me this morning? :) )
Sadly, time and money conspire against my honest wish that I could spend in-person time with all my Plurk buddies.

(EJ) says: if you could have dinner with anyone, who would it be and why?
I’ll assume you mean any living actual human, but if not, please re-ask  The answer would be president Obama, because I want to get his perspective on what he’s been put through so far, and why he has been consistently such a disappointment to progressives.

(SM) says: How many licks does it take to get to the center of a tootsie pop??
Three (Me: OK, here I was cheeky. Sorry.)

(RU) Why the @&#*$! was Rupe awakened by a hideous dream so that he couldn’t go back to sleep? The day: She’s gonna be a long one …..
Because your brain chemistry misfired and caused an event that transitioned you from sleep to wakefulness out of cycle.

(AM) What is your favourite song? You can choose a few =)
Oh, gosh, I have so many! Lately, “Love Song for a Vampire,” “Little Earthquakes,” and “Chronisch Pleite” play in my head a LOT.

(TP) What made you decide to offer yourself this way today? Considering the potential for really personal questions?
Easy! My friend AV asked me. Since he’s been kind enough to share his personal life with me online and in print, the least I could to is offer to do as much of the same for him. And I don’t mind people asking me questions, even very personal ones.

(AK) thinks that RU should look closely for *snickers wrappers* ….**MUUAAAHAHAHAHA**
No fair not asking questions here :)

(RU) *knew* it … !!!
(Me: Quiet down there in the peanut gallery!)

(AV) I thought you’d never ask! Poor David, I haven’t made extra work… have I? :-?
Not at all! Seriously, I like this kind of thing  I signed up for the Web site that does the same, but I can’t recall its name.
(Me: it’s in the blog sidebar, actually :-) )

(ST) If elected, what steps would you take to preclude jeb bush from getting nominated for presidency?
I’m not sure that I *could* take any steps, ST. If he meets the legal criteria, he has a right to run.

(RR) asks: if there were one thing in this world you could get rid of forever, what would it be?
Humanity’s fear of the unknown. I think it drives much of the hate and anger that causes pain in this world.

(MH) what processes would a quad processor really speed up?
I’m not a hardware guy, but I think the answer depends on the operating system using the QP and how it + apps are written.

(RR) wonders if he will just blog the answers to all these ?’s
That’s a clever idea, and would let me have a good post for today :)

bath/shower? Shower out of expediency and living in a home without room for a big bath.
markers/crayons? Yes. Both have their uses!

last thing you celebrated? Gosh, I’m not sure. Last year ended on some really horrible notes and this year hasn’t started all that great.
last time you were at a sports bar? Hm. I’m not sure I ever have been. Restaurants that double as that, maybe in the past few years.

Welcome to the Christmas edition of getting to know me:

Thanks to @Cara Young for prodding me on this one :)

  1. Wrapping paper or gift bags
Yes. Depends on the gift (and, of course, whether there will be any gifts this year…)
  2. Real tree or Artificial
If I have a tree, it’ll be a real tree, period.

Some time after Thanksgiving, if I have one.
  4. When do you take the tree down

  5. Do you like eggnog
I do, but it’s so rich I usually limit myself to a quart a year.

My grandma Dahlgren bought me a LEGO kit of the Apollo lander when I was so young, I don’t remember how old I was…but I’ll probably never forget the LEGO bricks.
  7. Hardest person to buy for
Mom, probably, because she never wants anything.
  8. Easiest person/s to buy for

Mom gave me an angel as a present one year, so if I have a tree that’s what tops it.

None; I believe I only have one copy of each book on my shelves.

(Thanks to @AbleReach from Plurk for bringing this to my attention!)

Oprah—love her or hate her—has an interesting quiz on her magazine’s Web site. Though the quiz is long, aimed at women, and the designers did a poor job of presenting it (the leading body copy and graphic are repeated page after page, making one wonder if this is the quiz that will never end), the questions are interesting and the results? Well, see for yourself what mine says about me:

YOU ARE STRIVING TO BE IN CONTROL
You are a leader:
You approach everything as though you were born to be in charge. Confident, assertive, and decisive, you know what you want and you go after it. You also look out for family, friends, and community—you feel you know what’s best for them—and have no fear of confronting anyone who challenges your ideas. Taking the driver’s seat, you also generously donate time and energy to people and neighborhood projects.

What to watch out for: When you feel threatened, or others refuse to go along with your agenda, you can become confrontational and domineering, sometimes to the point of being dictatorial. Practice letting someone else take charge on occasion. Also try meditation; it can help you be-come more aware of your controlling impulses and ease the anxiety that may be provoking them.

Looking ahead: You discover your purpose when you take control of your environment. For you, finding a decision-making role is key. That could mean anything from producing a play to spearheading a global campaign for something you care about. In work, you’re suited for leadership positions in education, government, industry, finance, religious institutions, or politics. But you can find satisfaction anytime you’re given the autonomy to do things your own way.

YOUR SCORES
Many people have two or three strong striving styles, and they can all be important in leading you to the person you are meant to be. If you have a few “highest” scores, read each matching description, and see what rings most true.

Striving to help: 13
Striving to be recognized: 9
Striving to be creative: 16
Striving to be spontaneous: 10
Striving to be knowledgeable: 17
Striving to be secure: 12
Striving to be in control: 18

STRIVING TO HELP
You scored: 13
You are a nurturer: You are caring and supportive in your personal relationships as well as in your job. Unselfish and altruistic by nature, you often anticipate the needs of those around you before they are aware of them. If there is one thing that brings you satisfaction, it’s tending to others.

What to watch out for: When you’re doing things for people only to feel valued, you can become resentful. And if you sense that your help is not appreciated, you may end up playing the martyr. So before giving your time to everyone else, make sure to take care of yourself (physically, emotionally, and spiritually). And practice waiting until someone asks for help: While you may be able to perceive what a person needs, that doesn’t mean she wants you to attend to it.

Looking ahead: It’s important for you to be genuinely of service in acknowledged ways. Whether you foster a child, care for an elderly aunt, rescue animals, or support a rock star’s career as her personal assistant, look for opportunities where you can help other people or bigger causes. Volunteer work has your name written on it, as do many careers: nursing, teaching, customer service, healing, social work. Don’t feel pressured to run the company or lead the project; you may be even more effective as someone’s right hand. And you’ll likely find working with other people more meaningful than flying solo.

STRIVING TO BE RECOGNIZED
You scored: 9

You are an achiever: Ambitious, competitive, and hardworking: That’s you. With a clear image of who you are, you work tirelessly to make sure your accomplishments are recognized. Your drive for success extends to your family, and you invest a lot of energy in helping them live up to your expectations. Thanks to your knack for diplomacy and abundant charisma, you often inspire others.

What to watch out for: You are prone to becoming a workaholic, slaving away toward success while neglecting your personal life. Because you’re driven to gain approval, you can find yourself performing for others like an actor; if you become overly concerned with your image, you end up feeling superficial. To keep your ambition under control, get involved in group activities that require cooperation. Also practice listening to those around you and think about sharing the spotlight from time to time.

Looking ahead: Any career that allows you to scale the ranks and gain recognition, status, even material rewards, lights you up. Actress, entrepreneur, salesperson, politician—you get the picture. And consider balancing your professional challenges with personal ones: Run a 10K, train for a triathlon, compete in a tennis tournament, bike from one end of your state to the other; or join a debate team, play in a poker circle, enter your purebred spaniel in a dog show. Whenever you can win at something, you’re happy.

STRIVING TO BE CREATIVE
You scored:
16
You are an artist: You came out of the womb with a paintbrush in your hand. Or maybe it was a flute or a castanet or a fountain pen to go with your poet’s imagination. The point is, you’re an original, and you know it. Even if you don’t have a singular gift, you’re drawn to the arts—anything creative, for that matter—and you have a unique way of looking at the world. Your need for depth and authenticity in relationships can lead to both great joy and profound sorrow, depending on whether others reciprocate. You don’t care so much about adapting to group or societal expectations; your independence and sharp intuition propel you on your own path.

What to watch out for: When fear of conformity overrides your creativity, you can assume the role of “outsider” or “orphan” and end up feeling alienated. You may even go so far as refusing to vote or pay taxes. This lone-wolf stance might be a defense against feeling vulnerable. Try to be aware that blaming others for your banishment, or pushing away those who want to get close, only makes things worse. Also, dramatizing your emotions can interfere with your creativity.

Looking ahead: As long as you genuinely express yourself, you feel like the person you were meant to be. How you do it is irrelevant. A chef or architect can be as much of an artist as a painter or sculptor. Many advertising and public relations executives are also highly imaginative. Beyond work, there are opportunities everywhere you look to coax out your inner artist: Design your own jewelry line, create an innovative blog, dream up a comic strip. Relationships are another avenue for self-expression.

STRIVING TO BE SPONTANEOUS
You scored: 10

You are an adventurer: Action-oriented, curious, outgoing, and often technically gifted, you live for new experiences. You are drawn to risk-taking and aren’t afraid to fail. Generally restless, you tend to job-hop or choose a field that offers constant novelty. If you had to name your favorite place, it might be the center of attention—you’re a born entertainer, and can easily adapt to any audience. While you collect many acquaintances, you’re less likely to develop deep, committed relationships.

What to watch out for: When you can’t satisfy your thirst for variety and excitement, you may see yourself as trapped, which can lead to impulsive and self-destructive behavior—drinking, drugs, breaking off relationships, ditching financial responsibilities. Try to find value in some traditions; if you learn to appreciate repetitive experiences, you won’t always feel the urge to bust free. And when a new opportunity thrills you, keep in mind that just because it sounds exciting, that doesn’t mean it’s good for you.

Looking ahead: Life will have meaning for you as long as you feel stimulated. That might mean chasing twisters, exploring the polar ice caps, getting a degree in dance therapy, or becoming an astronaut. It might also mean reading new books, attending workshops, or letting yourself get swept up in an intoxicating romance. As a risk-lover with a lot of energy, you’re a natural entrepreneur. You’ll be happiest if you change jobs every so often and travel extensively. Movement is what keeps you going.

STRIVING TO BE KNOWLEDGEABLE
You scored: 17

You are an intellectual: As a leader, you’re often ahead of your time. As an employee, you try to surpass the competence level of peers, even managers. Incisive and curious, you’re driven to deeply understand how things work. But that’s things, not people. Oh, your family and friends are important; it’s just that you don’t need to spend hours engaging with them. Social validation isn’t your goal—you’re secure enough in your cerebral pursuits.

What to watch out for: When you can’t find a way to be the expert, you may withdraw or simply withhold information, which can make you seem smug or arrogant. If you feel yourself retreating into your own world, seek a friend’s help to pull you back. Also balance your cerebral tendencies through physical activities like jogging, hiking, or dance.

Looking ahead: You discover who you are meant to be through accumulating insight and knowledge. So follow your curiosity. Are you drawn to learning Mandarin? Join-ing a philosophy society? Studying and practicing Buddhist meditation? Delving into the complexities of computer programming? Writing a historical book? Pursuits that place you near the leading edge of technology, science, psychology, academia, or business are good bets. But any situation that allows you to work independently with freedom to investigate and innovate will fuel your drive.

STRIVING TO BE SECURE
You scored: 12

You are a stabilizer: You are the rock in a storm, the one others lean on. Loyal and com-mitted in your relationships, you maintain a support system of like-minded people whom you look out for. (So what if you do it behind the scenes and don’t get credit?) You’re careful with money, cherish the familiar, and defend the traditions you care about.

What to watch out for: Rapidly changing environments (like a shaky economy) are very hard for you. As a result of such instability, you can spiral into a state where everything seems catastrophic and you’re sure life will only get worse. You can also become overcontrolling, rejecting any suggestion that doesn’t conform to your idea of the way things should be. To avoid being too rigid, each month try changing one habit. Exper-iment with clothes, drive a different way to work, initiate conversations about subjects you wouldn’t normally discuss. And when the opportunity arises to do something new, avoid the impulse to immediately say no—this may be nerve-racking, but the more you practice, the less anxious you’ll feel.

Looking ahead: You find meaning in pursuing safety and certainty. Focusing on family can give you great satisfaction. Also consider planting a vegetable garden, hosting class reunions, volunteering as a lifeguard, teaching at your church or temple. In the work arena, look for positions where you’re responsible for others, and for making sure everyone is following the rules. You work well in any environment that is stable and consistent. Careers in government, finance, the military, law enforcement, and product manufacturing are strong options for you.

STRIVING TO BE IN CONTROL
You scored: 18

You are a leader: You approach everything as though you were born to be in charge.

What do you think?

Once again, the Meme-monsters of Facebook strike! This one is a bit on the lame side, but giving consideration to the fact that I have been lame and not posted anything in weeks, I’m afraid it is the best I can come up with and not have it be a rant or polemic on the fucked-up healthcare reform process my country is lurching through right now.

  1. What was the last thing you put in your mouth?
    Coca-Cola.
  2. Where was your profile picture taken?
In my home office (without a candlestick).
  3. Can you play Guitar Hero?

What shall I name them? OK, OK… Konstantin.
  5. How late did you stay up last night and why?
I think it was about midnight, and because I wasn’t tired enough to fall asleep sooner.
  6. If you could move somewhere else, would you?
    Yes.
  7. Ever been kissed under fireworks?
Um, no, my sense of self-preservation is greater than my desire to have my lips incinerated by falling bits of flaming debris and incandescent gas. Sorry!
  8. Which of your friends lives closest to you?
    Peter.
  9. Do you believe exes can be friends?
    Rarely.
  10. How do you feel about Dr. Pepper?

I live every day without television and, on the whole, don’t miss it one bit.

    Mom.
  22. What does the last text message in your inbox say?

  23. How do you feel about your life right now?
It could both be significantly better and significantly worse.
  24. Do you hate anyone?
That depends on how you define “hate” (this question has bitten me in the ass before). Let’s just say that I have strong feelings of dislike toward any number of people.
  25. If we were to look in your Facebook inbox, what would we find?
    Very little.
  26. Say you were given a drug test right now, would you pass?
I suppose it depends on what the test is looking for. I can’t think of anything I’ve ingested that would trigger a positive result for illegal substances, though.
  27. Has anyone ever called you perfect before?
Probably. The real question is: did they mean it?
  28. What song is stuck in your head?
    “Oceania, ’tis for thee”
  29. Someone knocks on your window at 2:00 AM, who do you want it to be?

It’s meme time again, boys and girls! Today’s exposé is brought to you by the letter C, as in Citizen Janey; and the letter P, as in Perpelina, two of the bestest ladies on Plurk. If you care to play along, it’s quite simple to roll your own beat by copying the twenty-four “tracks” below into your own “album” and (I hope) don’t stretch the metaphor until it breaks!

  1. Of all the bands/artists in your cd/record collection, which one do you own the most albums by?This is a difficult question right out of the gate! Some of my bands have been more prolific than others, but it doesn’t make them favourites over the others! I’m pretty sure that Die Prinzen, at seventeen albums, comes in for the win here. They also happen to be a favourite of mine :)
  2. What was the last song you listened to?
    “Oceania, ’tis for thee”
  3. What’s in your record/cd player right now?
A lot of dust, since I haven’t used either device in lo these many years.
  4. What song would you say sums you up?
Either “The Imperial March,” from The Empire Strikes Back soundtrack, “The Shining Path,” from Big Night Music by Shriekback, or possibly “Love’s Almighty,” from Angel Milk by Télépopmusik. It could change at any moment, however…
  5. What was the last show you attended?
Tori Amos’ tour in 2009, and it rocked.
  6. What was the greatest show you’ve ever been to?
Probably the Depeche Mode concert in the very late 1990s. Do not let the fact that I cannot think of the album at the time as an indication that it wasn’t wicked, wicked cool.
  7. What’s the worst band you’ve ever seen in concert?
I haven’t seen all that many, so forgive me… but the eminently forgettable band that opened for Tori Amos on her current tour here in Washington, D.C.
  8. What band do you love musically but hate the members of?
    None.
  9. What show are you looking forward to?
Gosh, that’s a toughie, since I am generally quite unaware of any shows coming up. However, I would consider donating an organ to see Shriekback in concert…
  10. What is your favorite band shirt?
Buy me ones from all of my bands, and I’ll tell you which one I like the most :)
  11. What musician would you like to hang out with for a day?
    Laurie Anderson.
  12. What musician would you like to be in love with for a day?
Barry Andrews. Or maybe that cutey from Electronic. Or… really, do I have to list all of the hot men from my iTunes library? :D
  13. Sabbath or solo Ozzy?
I’ll take a pass; sorry, neither are interesting to me…
  14. Commodores or solo Lionel Ritchie?
    Commodores.
  15. Punk rock, hip hop or heavy metal?
Geez, how about asking about genres I like? :) I’d probably go with Heavy Metal, just because they occasionally produce some stuff that’s good for when I’m in a black mood.
  16. Name four flawless albums:
I’d have to say there are no truly flawless albums, but here are four that come (in my opinion) close…

    • Angel Milk, Télépopmusik
    • Hello, Betty, BETTY
    • A-Capella-Album, Die Prinzen
    • Standing on Ceremony, Figures on a Beach
  17. Did you know that filling out this survey makes you a music geek?
(LOL) Me, a music geek? Tell me another one!
  18. What was the greatest decade for music?
Most any one of them has produced great music and steaming piles of shit. I grew up largely in the 1980s, so the bands from that era are the ones I identify with the most.
  19. How many music-related videos/dvds do you own?
Less than half a dozen. Who buys, when there’s YouTube?
  20. Do you like Journey?
Can’t think of a single song of theirs.
  21. What is your favorite movie soundtrack?
I’ll give you two: The Cook, The Thief, His Wife, and Her Lover (for two tracks); and A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, but ONLY the one with Zero Mostel. Which, I must say to my great thrills, I have just found on CD!
  22. Rolling Stones or Beatles?
Beatles more than the Stones, but that’s just me.
  23. What’s the crappiest CD/record/etc. you’ve ever bought?
I don’t recall the title, but Leonard Nimoy sang on it… and he is a worse singer than William Shatner will ever be an actor, let me tell you…
  24. Do you prefer vinyl or CDs?
    Digital all the way, baby!
